BN Government Not An Irresponsible Populist Government, Says Najib

KUALA LUMPUR, April 2 (Bernama) -- The Barisan Nasional (BN) government is not an irresponsible populist government, but instead, is very wise in policy making and government spending, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The prime minister said in policy making and government spending, the BN government never had any intention to cause significant financial damage, let alone bankruptcy, to the country.

"We have and will always be honest and straightforward with the people about the things we can and cannot do. However, certain quarters find it easy to just promise the moon, the stars and the world to the people without thinking of the consequences."

Najib said this when launching the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) Annual Report 2011 at Angkasapuri here tonight.

The launch was also aired live on RTM 1.

The prime minister said the BN was not afraid to compete in a free and competitive market as the government was democratically formed through free and fair elections.

"We have full confidence in the wisdom of the people to choose and make the right decision.

"They can tell the difference between real and fake diamonds. We believe that the people will choose a government with proven track record and which puts the interests of the people above anything else," he said.

Najib said the government had also taken various measures to turn Malaysia into a more democratic country by abolishing the Internal Security Act (ISA), Restricted Residence Act and Banishment Act, as well as lifting three Emergency proclamations.

Besides these, drafting the Peaceful Assembly Act to protect the people's right to peaceful assembly and speech as guaranteed under the Federal Constitution, amending the Universities and University Colleges Act to recognise the constitutional right of students to join political bodies, and amending the Printing Presses and Publications Act to abolish the need for annual licence renewal.

Najib said to ensure that the country would achieve the status of a fully-developed nation in another eight years, it needed an efficient driver that could combine the functions of all existing factors to ensure that the vehicle would reach the desired destination safely.

"Let's not experiment to change drivers midway, from the one proven capable to someone who is dubious and dangerous," he said.

Najib also reminded the people "not the make the wrong choice and to be careful with storytellers".

"These people are very good at making promises but not at keeping them. Their rhetorical theory and practice are not consistent.

"So, be wary with the music played by the piper who appears beautiful but in reality, full of deception," he added.
